For the second consecutive year, the Texas A&M University-Kingsville chapter of Sigma Delta Pi—the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society—has been selected as an “Honor Chapter” for the organization’s outstanding activities in 2012-2013.

The A&M-Kingsville Gamma Lambda chapter was one of 16 chapters selected from 585 national chapters for the distinction. It is the fourth time in 17 years the chapter has won the award. The recognition is based on the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the national society.

Throughout the year, the Gamma Lambda chapter sponsors a variety of activities, from the annual Latino Read-out and Dia de los Muertos Art Contest, to an immigration roundtable on the implications of the Dream Act in South Texas and holiday Posada.

The club also sponsored several academic programs, including the 10th Sigma Delta Pi Academic Student Symposium, and student members participated in a number of scholarly workshops and panels.

Chapter adviser Marco Íñiguez, lecturer in the Department of Language and Literature, attributes the organization’s success to student camaraderie, a commitment to promoting Spanish culture, growing membership and a positive academic environment that encourages the sharing of different ideas.

Additionally, Íñiguez, was selected for the 2013 Minaya Álvar Fáñez Award, granted annually to the Sigma Delta Pi’s chapter adviser of the year.

“This award is an affirmation of my work as a guide and mentor to the students of Sigma Delta Pi and the students of A&M-Kingsville in general,” Íñiguez said. “The opportunity to work with students of the region facilitating their social, academic and political formation is the greatest job in the world.”

An award letter from Sigma Delta Pi executive director Mark P. Del Mastro credited chapter adviser Íñiguez as instrumental in helping promote the chapter and its activities.

According to the national Sigma Delta Pi organization, Honor Chapter recognition is based upon the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding and upholding the goals of the society.

The chapter is currently planning activities for the 2013-2014 school year, including traditional activities and the 11th and 12th Sigma Delta Pi Student Symposiums planned for October 24 and spring 2014. The organization also plans a Spanish Language High School Competition in the spring.
