Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
What is the TSI Assessment?
The purpose of the new examination is to assess your academic ability in order to correctly identify your course sequence. The TSI Assessment will determine your preparation level for the subjects of reading, writing, and math. It was created by the state of Texas to save you time and money. Our mission is to make sure that you are successful. If you've already been admitted to the university, don't worry. This test has nothing to do with your admission.
Still not convinced of the importance?
Who is required to take the TSI Assessment?
As an incoming student you must satisfy Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements, unless you qualify for an exemption or waiver. Official documents must be submitted to the Office of Admission prior to Hoggie Days for determining exemption. Don’t worry, exemptions are permanent and do not need to be renewed each semester. You can be exempt or receive a waiver. To learn more about exemptions and waivers, click here.
We will contact you via email prior to your orientation to inform you of the status that we've determined for you for TSI. This will be based on official college or high school transcripts, official standardized test scores, and/or military documents.
How can I prepare for the assessment and how much does it cost?
Before taking the assessment, you must first complete the Pre-Assessment Activity (PAA). This is required for all test takers. The test costs $10 per section or $29 for all 3 parts and we need you to register at least one day prior to the test date that works best for you. We also encourage you to review some sample questions.
In addition, there is a new TSI Assessment Web-Based Study App that is free for all students. You can use this tool to become familiar with the style and content of questions in the TSI Assessment. The study app features practice tests in the TSI Math, Writing and Reading Assessments and can be accessed from a computer, tablet, or Smartphone. You can access the study app here.
