EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF STRATEGIC PLAN

EXPAND PROGRAM THROUGH RECRUITMENT OF QUALITY STUDENTS

As we move into the future, the Communication Sciences and Disorders Program of Texas A&M University-Kingsville is committed to expanding undergraduate and leveling (post-baccalaureate) enrollment AND building on its successful graduate program. The program will increase relationships with local community colleges and high schools in order to recruit promising students. The program will also increase undergraduate students’ exposure and experience with research in the field of study as an effort to offer critical thinking experiences in the undergraduate curriculum and expose students to the evidence on which their knowledge base has been developed. Meanwhile, we aim to expand the graduate program recruitment nationally. With high passing, completion, and employment rates, and by revamping when and how courses are offered so that students only need to spend one full year on campus, we are able to compete with other accredited national schools. We will continue to explore the option of using an online application process in order to increase our national exposure and diversify our applicant pool.

STRENGTHEN CURRENT GRADUATE PROGRAM

The program is committed to continual quality improvement. We will maintain a 90% 3-year average PRAXIS score and exceed accreditation minimums. Courses will continue to be monitored for currency of information. The program will commit resources to keep its teaching and therapy equipment and materials current. Externship supervisor feedback will continue to be collected to evaluate the knowledge and clinical skills observed in our students during the externship semesters. We will expand externship placement options statewide and out of state with the engagement of new clinical supervisors. We will also expand the amount and diversity of student’s on-campus clinical hours through simulated learning and community outreach experiences before beginning externship.

BUILD ON ALUMNI INVOLVEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT

We want to excite the CSDO Javelina alumni to get more involved with the program development, curriculum review, and clinical supervision. Plans include increased interaction with the alumni, including integrating them with our current students (i.e., community engagement activities, a mentoring program with alumni, and future SLPs). Alumni events will aim to increase donations and/or scholarship support for current and future students.
