A Message from the Dean


Dr. Heidi A. TaboadaIt is my pleasure to welcome you to the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering!

We live in a complex world with technical, political, environmental, and social challenges that are all interconnected. If you are a prospective student, I am fully convinced that an engineering background will allow you to pursue any dream.  And, although no solution relies solely on an engineering perspective, I can certainly say that every solution benefits from the influence of engineering.  In a time where technology is advancing at a very high pace, studying engineering is more exciting than ever! We need more engineers to advance society and work in harmony with other disciplines for the common good. As you can see, this is an exhilarating time to pursue engineering, and the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering is ready to provide you with the tools necessary to build and excel in your career.

Whether you are a student, a researcher, faculty, or scientist, the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering can provide you with multiple pathways to reach your goals. We have offered South Texas an access to a world class educational excellence in engineering and technology since 1936.

If you are a high school student still undecided whether engineering is for you or not, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I will be happy to work with you to go over what all engineering has to offer to the world. Moreover, at the College of Engineering, we have excellent and committed advisors to work with you in case you have questions about your future career plans. We are proud to count on the Javelina Engineering Student Success Center (JESSC). JESSC’s main mission is to work together with you and our faculty to improve and increase retention of our engineering students as well as to advise our students to engage in various High Impact Practices such as undergraduate research, internships, community service, leadership in student organizations, and study & research abroad. All these practices are aimed to enhance your extra-curricular learning experience outside the classroom!

Currently, our college offers undergraduate students a wide range of options to pursue their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. We have seven BS programs accredited by the Engineering Accreditation commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, including architectural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, and natural gas engineering. We offer a BS degree in Computer Science accredited by the Computing Accreditation commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org. We also offer BS degree in industrial management and applied engineering technology, which is accredited by the Association of Technology, Management and Applied Engineering (ATMAE), https://www.atmae.org. Additionally, the College has two new BS programs in computer engineering and industrial engineering that are on target to complete the necessary milestones prior to undergoing the ABET accreditation process.

For students that decide to pursue a graduate degree, we offer Master of Science (MS) degrees in the areas of chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, industrial management, mechatronics engineering, mechanical engineering, and natural gas engineering. Our college also offers the MS in Industrial Engineering in both modalities, face-to-face and fully online. In addition, for students whose career goals include university teaching or research in the academic, commercial or government sectors, we offer a Ph.D. in engineering that can be tailored to specific disciplines as well as a Ph.D. in environmental engineering.

At each level of education, the College enables students to put theory into practice through hands-on learning, competition, and research. Our College of Engineering faculty is composed of highly engaged individuals dedicated to student success, research excellence, and the advancement of their discipline. Innovative research is being conducted by our faculty and their research teams that exposes our students to technology innovations pushing the current state-of-the art of the disciplines to new heights. Because we are a relatively small college, engineering students have ready access to their professors, to a degree rarely found at larger schools. That accessibility, combined with a dedication to teaching and mentoring, enables the college to graduate innovative engineers who are grounded in the techniques, the knowledge, and the collaborative nature of the engineering profession.

As you can see, we offer a wide variety of engineering degrees and minors in emerging areas. Choose yours or let us help you with your decision! We are here to help you succeed as you move along your unique path of excellence.

I am honored and privileged to serve as the Dean of the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering and look forward to working with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to build upon TAMUK’s great engineering tradition and together develop new opportunities in engineering research and higher education at our college.
