COVID-19 Emergency Grant Application

Through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), Texas A&M University-Kingsville has been given the opportunity to provide grants to students experiencing financial hardship as a result of disruptions due to COVID-19.   Students who have experienced a sudden change in financial status, loss of employment or other unforeseen obstacles that may hinder their ability to continue with and complete their academic pursuits are eligible to receive Federal CARES Act Emergency Grants.  The grants are funded through the Department of Education to assist students with expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, healthcare, and childcare expenses).

To ensure appropriate consideration for CARES Act Grants, applicants must provide supporting documentation such as a third party statement, copies of furlough or termination papers, notice of reduced hours, unemployment claims, copies of bills, doctor’s note, or other documentation that supports the claim being made about the disruption of COVID-19 to the applicant’s ability to continue with and complete their academic pursuits. Personal testimony by the applicant without supporting documentation is not adequate to support a claim for a CARES act grant.

Applicants must be Title IV Aid eligible and enrolled for the term in which funds are being requested. CARES Act does not allow universities to provide grants to students who were exclusively enrolled in an online program as of the March 13, 2020 emergency declaration.  Awarded CARES Act Grants will not count as estimated financial assistance (EFA) towards Cost of Attendance or the calculation of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC).  Therefore, these grants will not impact financial aid eligibility.  Application review will begin May 4, 2020.  Decisions regarding grant funding will be made through a holistic review of the application and socioeconomic circumstances.  Awards are subject to the availability of funds. All funding decisions are considered final.
