Area educators are invited to learn traditional Chinese New Year celebration songs and dances to take back to their classrooms during a special training opportunity  8:30 a.m.-3:30 Saturday, Jan. 23 in Rehearsal Hall #106 in the Bellamah Music Building at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated February 8-22 and will herald the Year of the Monkey.

Educators will learn authentic Chinese children's songs, games and crafts that they can share with their students.

Activities include Chinese children’s songs of numbers, greeting, friendship, clapping games, fun facts and simple art projects. A Chinese music curriculum book entitled Authentic Chinese Children's Songs and Music will be available. It includes a teacher's guide with 14 lesson plans, student songbook, student art portfolio and a 56-track accompanying CD.

This curriculum has been pilot-tested in Miami-Dade elementary schools. It will provide the participants an authentic experience that is ready to be applied to the classroom. The curriculum will expand the views of participants on arts integration and interdisciplinary strategies, and give the participants confidence in teaching the Chinese music, art and cultural materials.

The demonstration is free to American Orff-Schulwerk Association Members. A participation fee for non-members is $10. No music experience in required. Participants who wish to pay $5 for lunch must RSVP by Saturday, Jan. 16 by emailing wildhorsedesertorff@gmail.com. Register for the event here.
