Looking for activities for the children home from school for the summer? John E. Conner Museum, on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville, is now accepting registrations for Camp Conner, its annual summer day camp.

Camp Director Sandy H. Allen aims to provide a quality recreational program for children 6-12 years old. “Our goal is to have the children participate in both recreational and educational experiences in a fun and safe environment,” says Allen. “We encourage the children to develop socially, physically, and emotionally.”

Camp runs one morning per week (9:30 a.m.-noon) for six weeks. Classes are divided by age groups – Tuesdays, ages 6-7; Wednesdays, ages 8-9; and Thursdays, ages 10-12.

Each week is a different camp theme:

  • June 7th-9th: ‘Paint Your World’
  • June 14th-16th: ‘Kid Science’
  • June 21st-23rd: ‘Mi Tierra’
  • June 28th-30th: ‘America the Beautiful’
  • July 5th-7th: ‘Beading Hands’
  • July 12th-14th:  ‘Birds, Trees, and Snakes…oh my!’

All the themes are related to South Texas and the Conner Museum, which provides an opportunity to incorporate museum exhibits into the lesson/themes. “As an educator, I enjoy observing the kids being active, being engaged, and learning even after the regular school year is over,” Allen said. “I am amazed how this program is educational, fun and encourages independence. The interaction between old friendships and new friendships is so rewarding and valuable in their daily lives.”

Camp Conner costs $100.00 for all six sessions and the registration is done online Early registration is recommended, as slots tend to fill up quickly.
