Members of the advanced tax accounting class at Texas A&M University-Kingsville are assisting community members with their 2016 income tax forms through a program called Volunteer Income Tax Preparation Assistance (VITA).

The students will be available to help at the Texas Community Credit Union, 605 E. Caesar in Kingsville, from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursdays and from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, through April 15. Students are required to put in a minimum of 16 hours with VITA, but many work more.

To qualify for VITA assistance, the tax payer must make less than $54,000 per year and be prepared to file a 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ. The students also can help with schedules one, two and three; earned income credit; Form 2441, child and dependent care credit; Form 8812, additional child tax care credit; and Form 8863, education credit.

Those coming for assistance should bring a valid Social Security or ITIN card for all family members, photo identification, and all W2 and 1099 forms.
