Museum reception, exhibit to honor Li'l Oscar Cantu

Kingsville boxer Li’l Oscar Cantu will be honored Saturday, Aug. 25, at the John E. Conner Museum on the campus of Texas A&M University-Kingsville. A reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. to unveil a new permanent exhibit highlighting Cantu’s career.

The permanent home of Li’l Oscar Cantu exhibit will be in the Gallery of South Texas History. “We are very excited about the new exhibit highlighting local champion boxer Li’l Oscar,” said Jonathan Plant, museum director. “We are very thankful for the generous support and cooperation of the Cantu family in making this exhibit possible.”

“We are very excited about the new exhibit featuring Lil’ Oscar. He is a bona fide star from Kingsville and a role model to so many of our youth. We’re are constantly working to bring the Conner Museum to new audiences and increase support for our university’s museum, so this is a neat opportunity to do that,” said Brad Walker, vice president for advancement and external affairs at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

The reception, sponsored by the Conner Museum and the university’s Office of Development, will begin at 5 p.m. with refreshments and a cash bar. A special presentation and the unveiling of the exhibit will begin at 6 p.m.

Autographed photos of Li’l Oscar will be available for a fee. There also will be an auction of commemorative donated by Li’l Oscar.

All funds raised will be used to benefit children’s programs at the Conner Museum. 

The Conner Museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and closed Sundays and most university holidays. Admission is free. For more information, call 361-593-2810.
