Texas A&M-Kingsville Celebrates Earth Sciences Week

The Department of Physics & Geosciences at Texas A&M University-Kingsville will celebrate Earth Science Week with displays, an open house and a guest speaker.

            The week-long celebration begins at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14 at the Pavilion on the A&M-Kingsville campus, with a display featuring selected rocks, minerals, fossils and Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. At 2 p.m., Kingsville Mayor Sam Fugate will bring official proclamation of Earth Science Week in Kingsville. A Geoscience Open House at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 will highlight the department, while providing demonstrations in GIS, paleontology, mineralogy and petrology.

            Randy Bissell, geoscientist with Headington Oil Company, LLC in Corpus Christi will present GeoTour Barbados: Geologic field studies of deep-water reservoirs on a unique Caribbean Island at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 in Room 119 of Hill Hall.

            All events are free and open to the community.

           Founded in October 1998, Earth Science Week is the American Geosciences Institute’s national and international effort to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth
