Selina “Sally” Hemphill, who graduated from Texas A&I University in 1987, was selected High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year for 2017 by the Texas Association of Health Physical Education Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD).

Hemphill, originally from Ben Bolt, is currently head volleyball and tennis coach for the Refugio Independent School District. She began her career in the Benavides Independent School District and has taught at Tuloso-Midway, Calallen, Orange Grove, Bastrop and Quinlan Ford Independent School Districts.

As a member of TAHPERD, she has served as recreation chair, PC chair elect, chair and past chair. She also was on the health nominating committee, personnel committee and recently completed her tenure as physical education vice president. Hemphill is currently area representative.

While at Quinlan Ford, Hemphill and a colleague, Wendy Harsin, began doing presentations for area schools and at the state level during TAHPERD summer and winter conventions as the Queens of Thrift. They show teachers who to make equipment out of thrift store finds, common materials or trash.

Hemphill’s husband, David, is a 1986 graduate of Texas A&I University.
