College of Business Administration to host 11th Annual Community Breakfast

KINGSVILLE (February 25, 2022) — The Texas A&M University-Kingsville College of Business Administration will host their 11th Annual Community Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, March 3, in the ballrooms of the Memorial Student Union Building. The event is co-hosted by the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by IBC Bank.

 

This event is geared toward providing an additional dimension to fiscal awareness and responsibility to students and residents of Kingsville and the surrounding communities. Tickets are $10 per person or $80 for a table of eight. Online registration is required by Tuesday, March 1, and no tickets will be available at the door.

 

This year’s speaker is Dr. Gijs van Oort, adjunct professor at Texas A&M-Kingsville. He will talk about Supporting South Texas Community Organization during Crisis Recovery.

About Dr. Gijs van Oort

Dr. Gijs van Oort is an adjunct professor at the Texas A&M-Kingsville College of Business Administration where he teaches healthIT and Crisis Communications.  He was formerly CEO/Executive Director for HASA, the regional Health Information Exchange (HIE) provider to implement community-based HIE  services in North, Central and South Texas. 

 

He grew the organization from concept to an annual $2 million organization with a stable $1.2 million reserve. Van Oort carried responsibility for executing the mission of this 501 (c) (3) community collaborative, as well as daily operations and oversight of a team of eight professionals.  The organization is overseen by a board comprised of representatives of large and small health care providers from across the region. The organization has exchanged patient information since 2012.

 

Van Oort has developed consumer-based health services ranging from medically supervised wellness facilities to prevention technology applications for the corporate setting. This diverse exposure to the healthcare industry has contributed to HASA’s current success as the leading community HIE in Texas. As a community utility, HASA services support physicians, hospitals, payers and public health organizations.  In 2015, HASA was invited to offer its services in the greater Dallas Fort Worth and West Texas region.

 

Previously, van Oort was CEO of Practiva Health, a corporate wellness company, and Director for Business Development for the Nutrasweet Company. He served in various management capacities for hospital based wellness programs.  He taught at Temple University and Central Florida University and has been a guest lecturer at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

 

He received his undergraduate degree from the Haagse Akademie voor Lichamelijke Opvoeding in The Hague, Holland and a M.S. and Ph.D. from Southwest Texas State University and Texas A&M University, respectively.

 

Van Oort initiated multiple State-level professional organizations, including the Florida Hospital Based Wellness Coalition and the Texas Association for Health Information Organizations.

He served on the Texas State Medicaid IT Advisory Committee, The Bexar County Healthcare Collaborative Data Committee and the Bexar County Diabetes steering committee. He has published and presented nationally and internationally.
