KINGSVILLE (July 16, 2024) —The Financial Management Association (FMA) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) recently earned the Superior Chapter Award for the 2023-24 academic year from Financial Management Association International. This highly coveted designation is awarded to less than 10 percent of FMA chapters.

“It is an extremely joyous moment as this is the first time we have received this prestigious award,” said Dr. Priti Verma, FMA advisor and professor of finance for the College of Business Administration at TAMUK.

“It reflects superior student leadership. I am very proud to see our students dedicate their time outside of the classroom in a meaningful way,” she added.

“Receiving the Superior Chapter Award is extremely significant to our student organization because it serves as a demonstration of the hard work and dedication of our members, elected officers and faculty advisory, Dr. Priti Verma,” said Maricruz Quintanilla, former FMA officer and graduate student from Zapata.

“It is important as a student-led organization because it highlights our commitment to providing knowledge and hands-on learning experience to the TAMUK community. One primary factor we believe helped us obtain this award was our approach to student engagement and professional development, by encouraging members to sign up for FMA’s National Membership to gain access to high-quality research and receive essential news updates pertaining to the financial industry,” she added.

Quintanilla also said this year marked a significant milestone for the TAMUK chapter as five members were inducted into FMA’s National Honor Society, an international honorary society that specifically recognizes the achievement of finance majors.

Another former officer and current graduate student, Gabriela Willingham from Sandia said, “The Superior Chapter Award is an important milestone for our organization, recognizing how our chapter is set apart and our commitment is to encourage members to learn about financial management, both inside and outside the classroom.”

“The support from our College of Business Administration had been influential, particularly through access to our Bloomberg Lab, where members have gained invaluable insights into the financial markets,” Willingham added. “This past school year, we had the privilege of touring the Bloomberg Headquarters where we deepened our understanding of the terminals and their applications.”

In order to receive this prestigious designation, the chapter had to meet a number of specific criteria, demonstrate exemplary chapter management and excel in providing members with program activities.
