Activities:

Members of Alpha Sigma Alpha are committed to improving our communities. One of Alpha Sigma Alpha’s national philanthropies is the Special Olympics. Members also contribute to the S. June Smith Center, a private non-profit agency providing early identification, education, training, and therapy to infants and children in Lancaster County, PA with developmental disabilities and delays. Locally Alpha Sigma Alpha contributes and is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness, Click It or Ticket, Locks of Love, and Buckle Up your Truck.

Member Activities:

Promote Greek life through community service events and form bonds between fellow sisters.

Purpose of Chapter:

The purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to foster close friendships between members and develop women of poise and purpose. Our sorority promotes high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among the four aims of intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development. Alpha Sigma Alpha provides structure and guidance through: Sisterhood, which is a strong bond of unconditional friendship based on common values and experiences; Heritage, which is expressed through the creed, ritual, and history; and Opportunities for leadership and involvement in chapter, campus, and community.

History:

On November 15, 1901, a new sorority was organized by 5 women and named Alpha Sigma Alpha at The State Female Normal School, now Longwood University, in Farmville, Virginia. As stated in the charter, “The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among its members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.”

Requirements:

Any woman currently enrolled in Texas A&M University - Kingsville in good academic standing is eligible. The GPA requirements are a 2.4, or higher, with college credit and a 2.75, or higher, High School GPA. Women must be of poise and purpose and interested in promoting community service, Greek life, sisterhood, and high ideals and standards.
