Educator Preparation Program- Consumer Information

  1. Fingerprint and Background Check

Pursuant to the Texas Education Code (TEC), §22.083, candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to employment as an educator; and Pursuant to the TEC, §22.0835, candidates must undergo a criminal history background check prior to clinical teaching.

Preliminary Evaluation of Teacher Eligibility

Per HB 1508 effective September 1, 2017, all applicants to teacher preparation should be aware of the following:

  1. An individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of an occupational license upon completion of an educational program.
  2. A person may request a criminal history evaluation letter regarding the personal eligibility for a license issued by the licensing authority.

  • Passing Scores Required Before Student Teaching

Effective Fall 2015, all candidates accepted into the undergraduate traditional educator preparation program are required to pass the content area certification examination for the certificate field sought. 

  • Passing Scores Required Before Internship

Passing scores are required on TExES exams prior to placement in Superintendent or Principal internship courses. For more information, please click here.

As of September 1, 2015, candidates for all certification areas will be limited to five (5) total attempts on any certification test.

  • Grounds for Dismissal from the Educator Preparation Program

A candidate may be removed from the Educator Preparation Program in the event he/she demonstrates behavior not consistent with the professional and ethical expectations of an educator in Texas. Dismissal from the program may be based on grounds including but not limited to:

  1. Failure to meet coursework requirements;
  2. Failure to abide by policies and/or procedures established Texas A&M University- Kingsville Educator Preparation Program and/or program requirements established by the State Board for Educator Certification as published in the Texas Administrative Code;
  3. Any action deemed a violation of the Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators, and/or;
  4. Any action deemed a violation of the Texas A&M University Student Code of Conduct; and/or,
  5. Any action deemed a violation of school district and/or campus policy during field based experiences or clinical teaching or internship.
  • Educator Preparation Program Candidate Due Process

Texas A&M University-Kingsville encourages candidates to discuss their concerns and grievances through informal conferences with appropriate staff and/or faculty. Concerns should be expressed as soon as possible to allow early resolution at the lowest possible administrative level. If an informal communication regarding a concern fails to reach the outcome requested by the candidate, he or she may initiate a formal appeal. Email for more information.



Texas A&M University-Kingsville is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The educator preparation program is fully accredited by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC), based on the combined performance of all our candidates on the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES).
