Mission Statement of the Environmental Engineering Program
The undergraduate environmental engineering (EVEN) program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) adheres to three mission statements that reflect the goals of the University, College of Engineering, and Department of Environmental Engineering, respectively.
The mission statement of Texas A&M University-Kingsville is published online at http://www.tamuk.edu/administration/president/accred-mission.html. The statement says:
"The mission of Texas A&M University-Kingsville is to enrich lives through education, discovery and service in South Texas and beyond."
The mission statement for the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering is published online at http://www.tamuk.edu/engineering/deansoffice/know-more/vision-mission-goals.html. The statement says:
"The Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering:
- Graduates engineers who become participants in industry, profession, and society;
- Conducts research that significantly contributes to the well-being and sustainable development of communities and industries in South Texas, the state of Texas, and the nation; and
- Provides meaningful service to the profession and the communities that surround us and beyond."
The mission statement for the Department of Environmental Engineering is the following:
"The department’s mission is to prepare students for careers as practicing professional environmental engineers and provide them with the necessary academic fundamentals and skills essential for being successful in programs leading to advanced engineering degrees for the greater benefit of society."
Program Educational Objectives of the Environmental Engineering Program
To fulfill the goals expressed in the above mission statements, the EVEN program has outlined three Program Educational Objectives (PEOs). Primary constituents of the Texas A&M University Kingsville Environmental Engineering program include alumni and current and potential employers of program graduates. Within a few years of graduation, alumni of the TAMUK undergraduate EVEN program will demonstrate achievement in the following areas:
1) Our graduates will practice in one of the areas appropriate to the interdisciplinary field of environmental engineering (water quality engineering, air quality engineering, water resource management, hazardous and solid waste management, ecological engineering, engineering management, and environmental data management).
2) Our graduates will demonstrate leadership qualities (such as career advancement, community service, and professional society activity) and maintain high standards for professional and ethical behavior.
3) Our graduates will pursue continuing education opportunities to obtain and maintain professional licensure and board certification.
To Achieve the Educational Objectives, the Department Has Outlined the Following Student Outcomes:
By the time of graduation, undergraduate students in the Texas A&M University-Kingsville environmental engineering program will demonstrate the following skills:
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and
mathematic - an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
- an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
- an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
- an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
- an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
- an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
