Extension of J-1 Exchange Visitor Status
As a J-1 Exchange Visitor at Tamuk, you are eligible to request an extension of your non-immigrant status if the need for additional time is based on legitimate concerns of your sponsoring department. You can determine if you require an extension of your form DS-2019 by looking at the expiration date found in Section 3 of the document. Requests for extensions of status can be made no earlier than 60 days prior to the expiration of your current document and may be requested for one year intervals. Please note, a request for an extension of your status must be made before your current DS-2019 expires.
To request an extension of your J-1 Exchange Visitor status, please have your department complete and submit page 1 of Form OISSS-200 and return it to our office with the required supporting documentation. Financial documents verifying coverage for the entire period of the extension is required. Updated medical insurance coverage documentation should be submitted with the extension request.
Please note that on September 13, 2022, DOS revised the FAM to say that an exchange visitor becomes ineligible for an extension of a J-1 program when DOS forwards a positive 212(e) waiver recommendation to DHS, rather than when the RO receives notification of the forwarded recommendation.
