Student Employment Guidelines


Undergraduate Student Guidelines

 

  1. The student must be enrolled for at least six (6) graduate or undergraduate semester credit hours during a fall or spring semester. For work eligibility during a summer term, a student must be enrolled for at least three graduate or undergraduate semester hours during the term in which the work is to be done or have been enrolled as a student the prior semester/term and have a reasonable expectation of returning the next term or semester. A student who graduates mid-month may continue to work as a Student Worker until the end of that month. The usual work schedule for a student employee should be at most nineteen (19) hours per week.  
  2. Undergraduate student employees may work up to 40 hours per week when school is not in session (i.e.: Spring Break, Winter Holiday, between summer sessions, etc.).   3. The student worker who holds a position for which student status is required for employment is not eligible to participate in retirement or group insurance programs, nor are such students eligible for fringe benefits or holidays. 

The following classification descriptions serve a specific purpose. They are intended to provide general information and to guide departments in selecting an appropriate student job title and pay range. These descriptions are not meant to be exhaustive but rather to provide a general understanding of the roles and responsibilities of student employees. They are a tool to determine a classification for a student employee, helping to ensure that the right students are placed in the right roles.  

Student Worker I (U7621)

Student employees with the Student Worker I job title are provided ample learning opportunities. The job duties usually require minimal training, typically routine, and involve little decision-making. Depending upon the campus department, job duties may require physical exertion or unpleasant working conditions. Student employees holding this job title are generally well supervised, ensuring a supportive learning environment. This emphasis is on the university's commitment to the growth and development of its student workers.  

Student Worker II (U7622)

Student employees holding the Student Worker II job title typically have previous training, experience, or knowledge, sometimes including mechanical ability and manual dexterity. Depending upon the job duties assigned, limited independent judgment may be required. In some departments, the work may include responsibility for others' safety and property. Student employees holding this job title may occasionally supervise one or more Student Worker I’s, indicating a potential for growth and development within the student employment system. This recognition of their skills and potential for advancement within the system is a testament to the university's commitment to its student workers.  

Student Technician I (U7519)

Student employees holding this job title typically have technical skills or knowledge of the job through previous training and experience, often extensive; need little day-to-day supervision; exercise some independent judgment in defined areas of assignment; and may regularly involve the supervision of Student Worker I’s and II’s. The job duties performed may also be an essential, perhaps critical, component of the overall operation of the employment department. Since Student Worker I and II classifications already require prior skill and ability, the Student Technician classification is expected to be used sparingly. The functions performed in this job title might be similar to those performed in positions such as lab attendant, research assistant, statistician, graduate, or another specialized field. 

Student Technician II (U7679)

Student employees holding this title must have technical skills or knowledge of the job through previous training or experience and would need little if any, supervision. This position may require supervision of other student employees and may be an essential function of departmental operations. The Student Technician II title is expected to be used sparingly and as a level of progression from Student Technician I. 

Student Computer Services Technician I (U7393)  

Student employees holding this job title must have computer technical skills, knowledge of the job through previous training and experience, and demonstrated customer service skills; they require independent thinking and decision-making with minimal supervision; they may require demonstrated responsibility over vital and confidential information. The job duties performed may also be an essential, perhaps critical, component of the overall operation of departmental information technology services. They may regularly require taking the lead role on work assignments. The Student Computer Services Technician I classification is expected to be used sparingly and as a progression from the Student Technician II position if the department's needs are weighted heavily toward service-oriented computer support. 

Student Computer Services Technician II (U7394)  

Student employees holding this job title must have computer technical skills, knowledge of the job through previous training and experience, and demonstrated customer service skills; they require complex independent thinking and decision-making with minimal supervision and demonstrated responsibility over vital and confidential information. The job duties performed may also be an essential, perhaps critical, component of the overall operation of departmental information technology services. They may regularly require taking a supervisory role over work assignments. The Student Computer Services Technician II title is expected to be used sparingly and as a level of progression from Student Computer Services Technician I. 

Student Manager (U7671) 

Responsible for overseeing the operations of a facility in the evening, on weekends, and during other pre-arranged hours. Duties include staying abreast of facility policies, guidelines, and procedures; preparing reports; assisting in planning, developing, and implementing activities; opening/closing the facility; training and supervising other student workers; ensuring smooth operation of events, meetings, and other activities of the facility; ensuring security and safety; managing emergencies and conflict resolution appropriately; and assisting with special projects related to the department. Individuals must possess excellent customer service skills, as well as practical and professional interpersonal skills. Position may involve moving/lifting heavy objects and bending/kneeling/stooping. It is expected that the Student Manager title be used very sparingly. 

State College Work-Study Student (U7659) 

This title will be used for any student in the State College Work-Study (CWS) Program who receives State CWS as part of their financial aid package. The pay rate for student employees on CWS will be equivalent to the work level, i.e., comparable to items 1, 2, or 3 above. 

Federal College Work-Study Student (U7650) 

This title will be used for any student in the Federal College Work-Study (CWS) Program receiving Federal CWS as part of their financial aid package. The pay rate for student employees on CWS will be equivalent to the work level, I.E., equivalent to items 1, 2, or 3 above. 

Student Tutor I (U7755) 

This title should be used for students with tutoring responsibilities who have an established academic support program, less than one year of academic support experience, and/or subject mastery no higher than the sophomore level. 

Student Tutor II (U7754) 

This title should be used for students who have tutoring responsibilities with an established academic support program, have at least one year of academic support experience (with excellent performance evaluations from the Tutor coordinator), and have subject mastery at no lower than the junior level. 

Student Tutor III (JC-6151) 

This title should be used for students who have tutoring responsibilities with an established academic support program, have at least two years of academic support experience (with excellent performance evaluations from the Tutor coordinator), have subject mastery no lower than the junior level, and demonstrated leadership skills befitting a tutor mentor. 

Student Worker-Special (U7762) 

Student employees holding this job title will have a particular job assignment for a short period. 

Non-Affiliated Student Worker I (U7033) 

A non-affiliated student employee is a student who is enrolled in an institution other than Texas A&M University-Kingsville (e.g., high schools, junior colleges, other colleges, and universities), working part-time on or off campus, and being processed through one of the Texas A&M University System payroll stations under the Non-affiliated Student Employee Title Codes. These non-affiliated student employees are not student employees by current definition, yet they must be paid the same rate as TAMUK student employees performing similar duties. 

Student Research Assistant U7678 

This title is used when research will be conducted for faculty or staff. The research may be conducted in any laboratory, computer, or other scientific manipulation of materials or data to gain information. 

 

A Workday request must be completed if a student is hired, reassigned, dismissed, or work status or funding source changes. The Financial Aid office must verify all hires and changes regarding Work Study students before being forwarded to the Employee Services Department.  All student hiring instructions may be obtained from the Employee Services Department’s Student Employment website. 

Student employees will usually be hired at the stated hourly pay rate for the appropriate job classification. Although each title has a minimum wage scale, employers may hire a student at a rate higher than the minimum. Employers should consider experience, level of responsibility, and comparable positions within the University in determining a starting pay rate. A concise justification should be provided where starting pay is above $12.00 and forwarded through the appropriate Vice President or Division Administrator for approval. Such approval should be secured before the student begins work. Employers requesting to hire above the minimum should contact the Office of Employee Services for guidance.
