Master Promissory Note (MPN)
What is a Master Promissory Note (MPN)?
An MPN is a legal document that contains the Borrower’s Rights and Responsibilities and Terms and Conditions for repayment. Direct PLUS and Direct Subsidized / Unsubsidized loans have different MPNs.
Who should complete this?
Students who have not previously received a subsidized/unsubsidized loan or Graduate PLUS loan under the Direct Loan Program. An MPN can also be good for up to 10 years if certain enrollment requirements are met.
Why do I need to complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN)?
The federal government requires you to complete MPN as a binding contract of your promise to repay your student loan(s). An MPN must be completed before a student loan can be disbursed to your student account.
