Quality Matters

Quality Matters (QM) provides professional development, a set of rubrics, and a course peer review process that work together to support faculty in improving the quality of online and blended courses. Quality Matters began as an initiative organized by a group of experienced online educators at MarylandOnline, Inc. supported by a FIPSE grant from the U.S. Department of Education. QM is a leader in quality assurance for online education and has received national recognition for its peer-based approach and continuous improvement in online education and student learning. QM has review processes for both online and blended courses, and online programs.

QM Statement:

Quality matters provides a set of course design tools which help instructors develop and improve their online courses. I began my experience with QM in 2012 by successfully completing Applying the QM Rubric and submitting my EDED 3313 course for a successful QM course review. Later that your I became a peer reviewer. In 2015 I became a QM Master Reviewer, a position I still hold today.

When going into a course for the review process, I am looking from the students’ point of view. Courses should be learner friendly, organized, aligned with stated learning objectives and standards, easy to navigate, and let all students know what to do from assignment to assignment and week to week.

Through my experiences with QM I have had the opportunity to see the very best online courses offered by universities across the nation. Several of the ideas I’ve seen regarding instructional design have been implemented in my own online courses.
