Upward Bound-Rural


About

This preparatory college program is federally funded by a grant through the U.S. Department of Education. The aim of the Upward Bound Rural (UB-Rural) program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post secondary education. Eligible students must show a need for academic support in order to pursue a program of education beyond high school. Students are offered the opportunity to enhance talents and skills related to their core curriculum, prepare for post secondary education and prepare for college opportunities.

The objectives of this program are met through participation in a variety of services. These services are offered during the summer component and academic year follow-up sessions.

  • Instruction in core curriculum
  • Academic tutorials in core curriculum and elective subjects
  • Academic/personal advising
  • Exposure to cultural awareness
  • Career awareness
  • Preparation for postsecondary education
  • Test-taking skills
  • Seminars/workshops
  • College and financial aid information

The UB-Rural program students are offered the opportunity to participate in an academic Summer Component which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Six week residential program at Texas A&M University-Kingsville
  • Get a feel for college life
  • Simulated college like classes
  • Intensive instruction in core curriculum
  • Workshops
  • Academic, personal, and career advising
  • Community activities

  • First generation college bound student (neither natural parent has a Bachelor degree)
  • Economically disadvantaged
  • Demonstrates academic potential and/or need for services
  • Students must have completed the 8th grade
  • Be enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th grade or 12th grade

  • Falfurrias High School (Falfurrias, Texas)
  • Premont Early College High School (Premont, Texas)
  • Raymondville High School (Raymondville, Texas)
