Certificate in Public Works


The Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering offers an undergraduate level, transcripted Public Works Certificate.  While all TAMUK students are eligible to complete the certificate, it is designed to enhance the job-ready skills of students in the B.S. Civil Engineering program who wish to pursue careers in the public works sector.  Public works involves the design of transportation, drainage, and water / wastewater treatment systems.  Job opportunities exist in all levels of government (city to federal) as well as in private consulting firms that work with government entities.

Certificate Requirements

The Public Works Certificate requires a total of 12 SCH (4 courses), 3 SCH (1 course) of which must be in addition to those used to satisfy the student's baccalaureate degree requirements.  All undergraduate certificates in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering are designed for B.S. + 1 course completion.  B.S. Civil Engineering students can complete the Public Works certificate by taking CEEN 3304 as their Structural Design Elective and selecting their 2 Engineering Electives + 1 additional course from the following options.

Complete the following 2 required courses (6 SCH) with a "C" or higher:

  • CEEN 3304 or AEEN 3304 (Reinforced Concrete Design)
  • CEEN 4369 (Transportation Engineering Design)

Complete 2 additional courses (6 SCH) from the following options with a "C" or higher:

  • CEEN 3365 (Environmental Engineering)
  • CEEN 4364 (Design of Water and Wastewater Conveyance Systems)
  • CEEN 4340 or AEEN 4340 (Engineering Project Estimation, Planning, and Control)
